What is a surgical mask?

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2R surgical masks?
Type I masks are typically 3 ply, made from 3 layers of fabric to protect the mouth and nose, and rectangle in shape rather than specifically shaped to the face. The Type I masks have ASTM certification.
